The original CD doesn't cover Windows 7 and afyet Googling, the sites are so perplexing. Some advice which to choose please.

Your printer probably is not suported by HP anymore so it would be in your interest to get a new one given that the price of them is really cheap these days and would be supported for some time to come

I do have a new HP, but the cost of cartridges ...

HP1100 laser cartrdiges use to cost £40+ but were much better value and as I still have a spare as well, I'll use the laser until it dies.
Windows 7 ships with the correct drive for that printer, no need to download anything, just select it from the list when you install the printer.

I'd have thought the fact it's a parallel port only printer would be more of a problem these days, as most computers don't have a parallel port.

Now if I could only find one of those that fully emulates a parallel port and will work with things like PIC programmers!

Works fine for me - from another PC also.
