Harry's a well-known and long-standing abbreviation of Henry - as Shakespeare wrote in Henry V: "Cry God for Harry, England and St George!".

my dad's name was Jack, pixi, but that was his name, not an abbreviation.

Henry Grace a Dieu was otherwise known as The Great Harry (ship).
Hardly an abbreviation, it has the same number of letters !
It is done because other people are insane and there is no accounting for them.
the only thing Harry is abbreviated from is Harold
It's a familiarity then (yes, not an abbreviation, LOL) - same as women named Margaret get called Peggy, I don't see the link there at all.
In my local area, John are Jacks and vice versa.
My brother's name was Henry but no-one ever called him anything but Harry. It cannot be called an abbreviation as it is exactly the same number of letters as Henry as also is John and Jack. Peculiar!
