How can you find out if a house is now owned by the council?

I bought a privately owned semi detached house 4 years ago. My neighbours split badly and their house ended being repossessed after it was gutted. for the last 10 months we have had new neighbours from hell move in.

Can a semi detached property, in a private area, be bought up by the council to be used under this affordable housing scheme? There is a massive shortage in the area.

If so how can I find out if my adjoined house has been bought up in this way by the council?

Also, surely this will severly decrease the value of my property. How is this fare? Is there anything i can do?

It is more likely to be housing association than council i would think. Even if it is owned privately, the council could be paying the rent for the tennants.
nusiance neighbours probably will not decrease the value of your property per se, but may well make it harder to sell (meaning you might have to lower the price to sell it) of course this only applies if you...

it will have been bought on a buy to let mortgage, a local estate agent will be the landlords agent, who's For Sale sign went up when the previous people sold it?
You can look at the title documents on-line via the Land Registry site.

i think it was Mann Countrywide who's board was up and i'm pretty certain it wasn't a buy to let sign.

i see you can purchase the title register on that website jackthehat. I see it tells you the price paid and names etc I think this will give me the info I need thanks

As to what you can do there are a few things - firstly if they are doing anything illegal you can report them to the police. If they are making a lot of noise you can report them to environmental health at the council. If they are doing things that are a health hazzard, you can report them to the council (they don't have to be council tennants for you to do this)
if you can find out the landlord, then you can open a dialogue with him/her
ps any sign would say "for sale" not "for sale, buy to let"
Quite possibly the case...your local land registry can tell you who the current owner is..at a cost... If it is council ownwd the tennant has to keep it in good order..complaints to council can have tennents removed..

depending on how long ago you think it was sold you could look up on a house prices sold for site such as rightmove or our property and put the postcode in and it gives you recent house price by house number and when sold, you might have to register on our property though
