I have had a painful left shoulder for about three months. It`s not frozen. I can`t bear much weight with that arm in certain positions and sometimes the pain goes down the front/side of the arm to the elbow and I find it difficult to put the arm behind me as when putting on a coat.
A nurse friend of mine told me about a condition where the gap in the joint becomes smaller (not arthritis) and her husband suffered from this which resulted in him having an operation to shave something off the joint. Anyone know the name so I can google it please?

May not be frozen now, but it could be freezing - thats the first stage. Mine was painful before I started getting loss of movement.
I have some problems with my right shoulder - watch how you lie in bed as certain positions seem to aggravate my shoulder. Initially the pain was severe and I went to see the doctor who told me what it was (and I forgot) but told me to keep using the joint but not to abuse it.

Sqad, your second suggestion rings a bell. I`ll check it out
Wolf - you`re right. Sometimes it really hurts when I wake up which is why I thought it might be the way I`m sleeping at first.
Try putting a pillow under your arm when you're in bed...really helped me.
