the explosion of Staffordshire bull terriers (Staffies) this dog is now becoming a major problem as they are so fashionable to be seen with, creating the hard man/woman

The problem is, irresponsible breeders trying to make a fast buck and people buying this breed purely for the looks of the dog, often with no idea of training or the fact that they actually need to exercise the dog etc.

The dog rescue societies etc are full to the gunnel's with these breeds and they are being destroyed by the the hundreds daily!

I really don't have a problem with the breed, they are great little dogs when bred and trained correctly, but in the wrong hands they can be a big problem.

Would compulsory training be the answer maybe?

I think if these people had to commit to a compulsory training regime for one evening a week for 3 months, maybe they would think twice about the purchasing of these poor dogs. then the ones that went through with the training would then know a little about the dog and its needs and they don't get a dog license until the training test has been passed, they then get their license which is displayed on the dogs collar.

I don't think licencing alone is really the answer as often these people have the finances available to buy the license.

I think dogs should be licensed but i don't think it is the answer to these dogs being bred irresponsibly.

ratter - I know that you feel strongly about this, but your opinion (right or wrong) is just that - YOUR opinion. You have lovely and well behaved dogs, but so have many of the others who have contributed to this thread.

You are a regular AB contributor and your posts are usually helpful, intelligent and well balanced.

I respect you input to this problem...

Sorry about the strange post. I was juggling around with it and posted it before I finished.

Nice of you to apologise Ratter.

LoftyLottie, that's terriers for you, like I said, I had terriers, mostly Jack Russells for years, they can be very headstrong and unpredictable at times, mine were always well behaved and would certainly never bite but they weren't the best behaved dogs I ever had, purely because of their excitable nature. I would probably not have a terrier again although I loved my time with terriers and think they are great dogs, I'm now just devoting my time and energies towards our Wolfhounds, such a different dog but what characters they are :-)
apology not accepted.

Oh well, you win some, you lose some, I tried!
"Woofgang is a mature lady? the name led me to believe it was a male for some reason, I apologise for being so outspoken to a woman!
my views are the same but I would not have spoken so harshly to a woman.

I think most men could shrug off my comments as I often do.

My apologies Woofgang for being offensive.

and yes I know I get carried away and defensive sometimes, none of us are perfect but I don't generally let rip at Women.

Once again Woofgang I apologise"

So you still think, without evidence, that I am stupid, a bad dog trainer who would deliberately damage my own dogs but if you had known I was female you would have put it differently and you call that an apology?

That's not even an apology for an apology
Question Author
OK, I apologise for my poor apology!!
I accept your apology for your poor apology....now about your views on my abilities?
Question Author
OK Woofgang, now your pushing your luck!!!

I apologise unreservedly for my remarks on your ability to train your dogs, (but you did say yourself that the training made your dogs worse) that shouldn't have happened but maybe there were circumstances I am unaware of.

If you were a guy, I wouldn't be apologising in such a grovelling fashion!!!

I'm sure we can beg to differ on some issues?
apology accepted. the matter is closed
:o) I'm feeling happier now.

My little terrier is still looking at me sideways with that hang dog expression on her face although I have long since forgiven her. She gave me a nasty turn yesterday and I will never know what caused it.

I love her to bits and the thought of her on the main road made me feel literally sick. I shook for a good ten minutes.
A look like this

Red scarf so she can be spotted in a corn field!! She is shorter than the corn!!
Lottie that is one cute face. They do the hangdog thing to make you feel bad...mine do it too after they have done something wrong
Where would we be without our doggy pals? I would be lost.
i'd be a lot richer...we spend more on their food than we do on ours
Just thinking now how rich we might be if we hadn't spent nearly 40 years taking on sickly and neglected animals and paying out for vets bills, food and everything else. But I wouldn't have missed it for the world. My animals have given me more pleasure and satisfaction than anything else I could have spent it on, and you can't take money with you when you go, can you!!
Lottie i completely agree....

<<<<<<< is sitting on the naughty step with tail between legs.

Im just agreeing, no matter what!!
Come off the naughty step and play...I said matter closed and I meant it :-)
Back to the Staffies...... We found it so sad that when we were looking in the rescue centres, and eventually found Coco, they were absolutely full of unwanted Stafordshire Bull Terriers.
In addition to Lankeela's views, I feel it would help reduce the number of litters being born if they limit the audience of puppy adverts. If they stopped sites like epupz and puppies being advertised in the local press back yard breeders may think twice about breeding.
