My husband has been diagnosed with loin pain haematuria, he has had problems with his kidneys for 5 years. What causes the abdominal swelling that goes with it and can it be resolved in any way? He is in constant pain and has to go into hospital every few monnths for a couple of weeks. This is a nightmare which is causing problems for our family.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Regrettably, I don't think that you're going to get any answers to your main question about the cause of the abdominal swelling. This web page (which is from a reliable source, i.e. the Renal Unit of Edinburgh Royal Infirmary) basically says that doctors have no idea about the cause of your husband's problem:

However I hope that the links under 'More information' might be of use to you and your husband.

Please note LPH will not affect the function of the kidneys. Pain is a separate issue and your doctor should be providing your husband with suitable pain relief?
