I can only think of Aegean or Afghan for the first word ?
I've got A-G-A- / S-A-L-S
I can find SPALLES, but don't know how it fits ?

This was one of the Labours of Heracles (Greek Myth). He was charged with cleaning the stables of Augeas and, in order to do so, he diverted two rivers to flow through the stables. (change to current ways),
