DVDs for use in USA

I want to send some DVDs from UK television programmes to USA. These would be bought DVDs. For instance: 'Last of the Summer Wine' and 'One Foot in the Grave'. Can anyone tell me if they will play on a US DVD player? Or whether they have been made in a format for the US market?

Unless the dvd player is multi-region UK dvds won't play. Both of those series have been released in Region 1, the US format.

Some older American Televisions won't accept the PAL (British) signal either, so even if your friends have a multi-region DVD player, their TV may not be able to read the signal.
