Dear all, I thought that I had read the definitive answer to this question but now I have found out that *that* answer was incorrect - hence I am turning to the font all of all knowledge - AnswerBank!

Q: What football teams in England have never been relegated from the topmost level of the English football pyramid? I read (in a national newspaper) 7 names and I even checked via ChatGPT (and IT got the question wrong as well). I'm not going to list the names here, so I can see what other people know. It is for a quiz that I am setting later on this week and just need to verify what is correct. (NB 'topmost level' includes the Premier League AND the previous First Division)

There are seven who've not been relegated from the English Premier League but this link shows they have all been relegated from the First Division at some point.https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/which-premier-league-clubs-have-never-been-relegated/vpm1glnufz1x1q8ay98uw5w3u

I knew about United (Manchester) but I'd totally forgot about Chelsea in the late eighties. I like the link but being honest wouldn't have come with the answer.

*up No pun intended

The link I included in the first post shows no team has always been in the top English division.

Yes it does. So the answer is None?

They'd be tables flying if it were a Pub Quiz question. 😉

What about Accrington FC, club disbanded rather than play in division 2 after a relegation match against Sheffield United 1892-93. You could easily argue that relegation never took place.

TTT has mentioned the only club, as far as I know, that has never been relegated in it's history, and that club is Arsenal.

And as stated by TTT, Arsenal were relegated in 1913. Known at that time as Woolwich Arsenal but still the same club.

Mmm. Thanks for the correction.

Have selected TheCorbyloon as the best answer as it shows (certainly to me) that the answer is NO clubs have played continuously at the highest level since football was invented in the Bronze  Age( see the film 'Early Man')
