Thanks again

My last two clues -

A rostrum is where you might learn to conduct (3) R?M

A novelist writing flipping newspapers, in part (1,1,4) ?/S/?A?P

Ta

Rcm - royal college of music (though not 100% sure)

t s garp - the world according to garp (John Irving)

rage inside pt (part) all reversed

Rags not rage !

I did think of Garp...

RCM seems logical given "learn to conduct".

I think 4d is RAM - I found this meaning of rostrum:

the curved end of a ship's prow

especially  the beak of a war galley

and this meaning of ram:

a warship with a heavy beak at the prow for piercing an enemy ship

so Royal academy of music rather than royal college of music
