Bamboo is a great substitute for wood due to its ecological efficiency. If an average tree requires 20 years of growth, bamboo needs only 5 to be cut and used as a building material.

When I visited Hong Kong a few years ago I was amazed at the scaffolding used on sites, it's all bamboo. Just lengths of it tied with rope. Very strong, and very much the thing used by all types of workmen.
