They don't sound the same to me either. I pronounce the vowel in "surf" the way I pronounce the vowel in "stuff", and with a tapped r.

So it is, Nightmare and I spelt it wrong. Tut!

Thanks anyway.
"And then there’s dose and rose and lose"

Those three words rhyme for me.
They sound the same to me, as well. Are there any accents though, where everything is pronounced phonetically? I'm sure there are a lot of valid variations. This looks like "my accent is better than yours" lol.
I once had a friend from Lancaster, who kept saying "there is no r in glass"... and yet ask her how she pronounced doll and roll... they sounded different. The hypocrisy :-)
CL, all those sound different to me. Dose has a soft s, rose doesn't. Lose has a long o.
dose usually has a hard s
rose has a soft s - pronounced like z
lose is usually pronounced looz - i.e. with a long u sound
I know of no-one who pronounces lose to rhyme with either rose or dose
I wouldn't say "dose" does have a hard s. To me that would be "doze"- to sleep.
pixie, hard s is the sound of s
soft s is the sound of z
Scotish National Dictionary

DOSE, n. Also doze.[doz Sc., but Rxb. du:z]

1. = Eng. dose, a portion (of medicine). The Sc. pronunciation is exemplified by the following quots.Sc. 1938  St Andrews Cit. (21 May) 4/2:
He treated his young brother to a liberal “doze” of cider.Abd. 1737  in Sc. N. and Q. (1894) 124:
To Dr Gaven Cocks, for his advice, and two dozes of salts for making the water operate.

Oh right, ok x
I’m intrigued as to how surf can sound different from serf. JimF, you’ve told us how you pronounce surf. How do you pronounce serf? And what is a tapped r?
Good post this Tuvok. :-)
To me, the pronunciation of the "e" in serf is similar to the first "e" in Eritrea.
Corby, are you Scottish?
Corby is in Northamptonshire but there's a large percentage of Scots or Anglo-Scots. Both mum and dad were Aberdonians but I was born here.

Its not pronounced high land

I've tried to watch that video and it keeps stopping either at five seconds or fifteen seconds. I seen it's been viewed 5,457 times and about 5,000 are mines.

Is it worth trying again?
Finally got it to work by another method. Was that just to hear the correct pronunciation of Highlands?
