I am obviously being very thick but I have solved 1a and can’t see where “I did” comes into it?!

The 'I did' is referring to Prospero. See above for explanation

Thanks dannyK. I’m aware of that but still fail to see what “I did” has to do with it unless it’s just the setter speaking for himself?

Slightly far-fetched clue I would suggest. “I” usually refers to the crossword setter however I rest my case! Thanks dannyk

Doona, occasionally the Telegraph Cryptic does throw up some far out clues.
It does work, whilst 'I' is very often indicating the setter it isn't a hard and fast rule.
