How does hair perming lotion work

01:00 Mon 30th Apr 2001 |

Asked dooza, here's The AnswerBank's reply:

A. Perming lotion is a chemical solution that alters the internal structure of the hair, making straight hair curly. The solution works by breaking down the sulphur and hydrogen bonds within the hair shaft; this softens the structure of the hair and makes it more pliable and easier to mould into a new shape. The new shape your hair takes depends on the size and shape of the rollers; it's also possible to straighten curly hair with perming solution, with the correct accessories.

Once the hair has taken to the new shape, the perm solution is rinsed off and a fixer (neutralizer) is applied to refix the sulphur and hydrogen bonds and hold hair in the new shape.

Q. How long does a perm last

A. A perm (short for permanent) on average lasts from two to six months, depending on the elasticity of your hair and the size of curlers used. Tighter curls last longer than looser ones.

Q. Is there any other way to make my hair look curly

A. Yes, you can set you hair into curls temporarily using rollers or heated curling tongs. Take a look at these wireless curlers and heated rollers.

Q. My hair has been dyed; can I still have a perm

A. Hair that has already been treated chemically tends to be more porous and, therefore, more absorbent. So, if you have dyed hair your hairdresser should use a milder formulation of perming solution.

Colouring and perming hair at the same time isn't recommended.
