...asked Laura B, who is heading overseas soon and wants to know the best things to take.

Q. How many clothes will I need to take

A. The minimum's best. Try and pick clothes that have a dual use. Take two pairs of hiking trousers, one of which you can dress up to look smarter, or a roll-up skirt that's easy to wash. Take two long-sleeved shirts, three t-shirts, three sets of underwear, socks and thermal underwear if you're going somewhere cold. Add a jumper or fleece and if possible take a warm, water-resistant jacket and a balaclava. If you're heading to sunnier climes, add shorts and a swimming costume.

Q. What about shoes

A. It's very important to get your footwear right as it can be very expensive to find what you are looking for abroad. Find boots that are suitable for hiking, but are not too heavy. Think comfort - possibly with Sorborthene insoles.

Q. What's the best sort of rucksack to buy

A. Capacity is all important on a long trip. Find something you are above all else comfortable with as you could be carrying it a long way. Next consider the sort of security you want. Do you want an open-top or zip-up type Think about a padlock and make sure it feels right on your back above all else.

Q. What about bits and bobs

A. A pair of flip-flops is handy if you're heading to a beach to avoid infections. Remember toothpaste, a clothes line, a flexible water bottle and good sunglasses.

Q. What about health wise

A. Make sure all your vaccinations are up-to-date and see the dentist before you go. Get a supply of prescription medicines before you leave, such as inhalers or contraceptives.

Q. Any essentials

A. Lots of travellers say they wouldn't travel without a torch, a knife or a camera. For some a mosquito net is vital.

Tip of the week

According to www.backpacker.com, a shower curtain liner makes a waterproof, durable and economical ground cloth if secured with grommets.
