UK Holidays Ever Pricier While Overseas Even Cheaper

16:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Overseas holidays are becoming cheaper while travelling in the UK has never been more expensive, new research has revealed.

Combine the costs with at-best unpredictable weather in the UK and it is unsurprising that two out of three Britons prefer to holiday abroad.

The costs of travel in the UK have increased by 5.4 per cent, while the price of holidaying abroad is decreasing all the time.

Steadily improving infrastructure, a great sense of atmosphere and more flights has made eastern Europe an increasingly popular affordable holiday spot.

"Going on a summer holiday is one of the biggest annual financial commitments for most households, so it is no surprise that we are increasingly trying to find ways to budget and bring the cost down," said a spokesman for the finance company that commissioned the research.

"With the emergence of low-cost airlines and the comparatively cheap prices whilst abroad, it is no wonder many consumers are seeking foreign shores, where they can make their holiday spending money go much further."

The additional costs can come partly from the price hike during the school holidays. Many families have to pay up to two thirds more for the same break in the holidays.

Experts fear the rise in prices may tempt even more cash strapped families to holiday abroad or even take their children out of school during term time.

Foreign resorts have been trying to keep prices down to encourage visitors to keep coming during the financial crisis. It’s easy for people to assume that it's cheaper to stay in the UK or that they should avoid the Eurozone because the weakness of the pound makes it expensive, but that is not necessarily true.

Holidaymakers can use their extra cash to find the best holiday insurance quotes online. It is vital to check the small print and make sure that all the activities you have planned are covered.
