A typical Australian holiday could include scuba diving, surfing and a variety of tours around the vast and unique countryside, but why stop there? If you want to see the real Australia you need to venture beneath the surface and not be afraid to explore some of the mystifying outback landscape.

Need to stay in touch? When so far away from home and friends you want to be able to keep in touch so make sure you have set your mobile phone to make international calls and find out how much it costs to phone home, otherwise you might have a nasty surprise waiting for you when you return home. While in Australia you might decide to get a separate phone number so you can make low cost international calls at local rates and no fixed contract, it ends when your trip ends.

You will need to secure a Visa before entering the country; you can do this in a variety of ways, the easiest of which may be over the internet. You may also wish to contact your nearest embassy to get advice about which visa you will need for your trip as you will need both a valid passport and visa in order to travel to Australia. There are many types of visa’s to choose from including the tourist visa, which provides a 3 month period but if you decide to stay longer you can apply for an extension again through your local embassy. You could also choose a working holiday visa, which entitles you to work while in the country if you are between the ages of 18 to 30. Finally you can apply for the student visa if you are planning on studying full-time and working part time.

Whether you have a week or a month to spend down under, there is plenty to keep you occupied. Located off Australia’s northern shore in Townsville, Queensland is the Great Barrier Reef. With a group of over 1,000 islands this area is unlike anything else in the world. Great Barrier Reef diving is incredibly popular, and the area is one of the most diverse underwater systems to explore in the world. Equipment for both diving and snorkelling can be rented at a number of spots near Marine Park, so you won’t have to cart equipment around with you while backpacking round the other places this varied country has to offer.

Sydney is Australia’s number one travel destination. With sights such as The Sydney Opera House, with its unique design coupled with the excellent acoustics make this cultural icon a must see stop in your journey. Even people that are not interested in opera will enjoy a visit.

One of the great things about Sydney is there is both culture and lots of fun activities as well. The beaches provide some of the most beautiful ocean side playgrounds in the entire world. Visitors can spend endless hours enjoying the sun and pristine sands, and then enjoy tours into some of the surrounding bush areas. Later, a night out on the town is a must, with an array of night spots that will accommodate just about every interest. While in town, don't forget to admire the spectacular Harbour Bridge.

While touring Australia you have to take time out to call into Melbourne, the heart of Australia. Melbourne offers a mix of modern architecture and amenities along with some of the most beautiful examples of Victorian architecture in the world, so get your camera out and start snapping to secure you have pictures to signify the memories that will last a lifetime. Shopping and food that ranges from fine cuisine to guilty pleasures can easily be found at Federation Square and the New Quay, so you easily pick up anything you need for your journey or even just browse the local style.
