Southwark Cathedral

16:37 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Southwark Cathedral is an oasis of calm in the hustle and bustle of London’s inner city life. This glorious Gothic building is the mother church in Southwark and has been a site of worship for over 1,000 years. Situated at the heart of Bankside it is close to London Bridge and the historic Borough Market.

St Swithin of weather fame founded a convent on the site which later became a monastery. William Shakespeare is believed to have been present when John Harvard, founder of the American university, was baptised here in 1607. This is the year that William's own brother Edmond was buried between the choir stalls. Nearby is the Shakespeare memorial.

The cathedral can be easily reach by public transport and is open to general viewing from 8am to 6pm every day. If a more structured visit is desired private tours can be booked in advance, however, tours for large groups may be subject to services and other activities taking place.

Southwark cathedral has a suite of six rooms which are available for hire for conferences, team-building 'away days', private dining or as green rooms for concerts and other public events taking place at the site. There is also room for a marquee to be erected in the Millennium Courtyard.

As a working cathedral Southwark has daily services seven days a week. There are also special services for Christmas, Easter and other major Christian occasions. The cathedral also hosts exhibitions, concerts and events. Often Southwark cathedral hosts choirs from other churches at its services.
