Melt under the Mallorca Sun

16:37 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Mallorca’s character is shaped by its climate. This beautiful little Balearic playground is very much a tale of two islands; the island of Majorca popular with tourists and the original Spanish Mallorca, rich in culture and historical charm.

Mallorca or Majorca?

The island of Mallorca has outstanding beaches along its entire coastline. And with over 300 days of sunshine a year this is the perfect island paradise for soaking up the scorching rays. Boasting a huge selection of beautiful beaches to enjoy from quaint coves where you'll be amongst just the few people to some of the most popular beaches on the island where hundreds of people flock to all year round.

Mallorca has some spectacular caves at various locations around the island. Probably the most spectacular are the Caves of Drach at Portocristo. As one of the most beautiful and adventurous places to go in Mallorca, the Caves of Drach (Caves of the Dragon) offer visitors fantastic rock and limestone formations where you can expect to journey through more than a mile of mysterious caverns-where rock formations reach down from the ceilings of the cave and grow up from the floors. With thousands of stalactites covering the caves they are made even more impressive by the top quality lighting arrangements.

Another must see for those seeking another side to Mallorca than the bars of the buzzing Magaluf, is the picture perfect mountain village of Deia. This beautiful village is perched high in the mountains overlooking the Mediterranean, on the western side of the island. If you want to take a leisurely stroll through the cultural sights on the island you should climb the steep, narrow streets of natural stone as they wind their way up to the small church at the top of the village from where you can enjoy spectacular views. If by the time you reach the top you have worked up an appetite you can enjoy some local cuisine in one of the restaurants located at the very top.

The Palma Sóller Railway is the best way to get to the charming town of Sóller. The atmospheric 1912-vintage narrow-gauge locomotive makes a scenic 27 -km (16.7-miles) trip through mountains, forests and olive and orange groves. You should take full advantage of the transport available so all you have to do it sit back, relax and enjoy the picturesque scenery.

Enjoying Mallorca:

It is common knowledge that the Spanish like to eat late so you can carry your daytime activities long into the evening before having dinner under the moonlight. There are a variety of charming underground old wine cellars which have been converted into cosy restaurants. These are called Cellars, and if you want to sample some real Spanish traditional dishes and wines, then these are the venues to head for. Choose these quaint eateries if you want to sample Mallorcan classics like 'llom amb col' (pork wrapped in cabbage) or 'frit mallorqui' (fried offal), for those who feel adventurous and want to try something new. The best cellars are found in market towns like Inca and Sineu.

Mallorca or Majorca (depending where you come from) is famous for its vibrant nightlife and you are sure to find a club or bar to suit your tastes. From Magaluf, the town that never sleeps to more sleepy retreats, the island offers something for everyone... As the day ends and night begins, Mallorca comes alive. Palma is fast becoming one of the trendiest capitals in Europe. It is not only a standard holiday destination it has become a weekend break city. This has enabled some of the Mediterranean’s funkiest bars and nightclubs to be voted must visit areas of the island in many holiday journals.

When the sun goes down, Mallorca is the playground of the rich and famous that party alongside the not so rich (or famous). Nightlife in Mallorca is exactly what you want it to be. Pretty much every taste is catered for, from the exclusive Tito's night club, favoured haunt of the rich and famous, to cabaret, casinos, foam parties, jazz, flamenco and karaoke. So get your singing voice ready then prepare to sing and dance the night away on this exotic paradise island.
