One of the greatest fascinations of India is the startling juxtaposition of old and new; centuries of history rubbing shoulders with the images of modern-day living, from slick internet cafes and fancy fast-food eateries, to swanky bars and chic boutiques.

One of the places that should be on your list to explore is Jaipur, located in the state of Rajasthan in Western India; famous for grand and glorious palaces. Jaipur is known as the Pink City because the old buildings in part of the city are all pink, providing a unique picturesque setting for a relaxing and intriguing stroll. For a more adventurous activity you should visit the Hawa Mahal, a palace built in the late 1700’s which houses a number of stairs to climb if you want to witness the breathtaking views.

Such a rich history has spawned an incredible number of exquisite palaces, temples and monuments. The most frequently visited part of India is the Golden Triangle, comprised of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur. Meanwhile, the people-packed cities of Mumbai (Bombay) and Kolkata (Calcutta) have a bustling, colourful charm, while the holy city of Varanasi and the awe-inspiring temples of Tamil Nadu are rewarding places of pilgrimage.

If you want to throw yourself into the culture and tradition in this exciting country you should try listening to the evocative instruments of Indian music, such as the sitar, sarod and the subtle rhythm of the tabla. There is a huge variety of dance forms throughout India each with their own unique costume; so if you want to join in with the elaborate dancing you should also wear the designated attire to feel like you are truly at one with the culture.

While in this beautiful country you should take time out to visit Goa; with long coastlines offering some of the finest beaches in the subcontinent you won’t want to miss out on the opportunity to witness such beauty. This city has such charming characteristics, and a strong blend of Latin and Indian cultures, which are apparent wherever you choose to go. As well as all the breathtaking architectural structures there are other features such as; the shops, bars and pleasant streets that contribute to the city’s main attractions. ‘Old Goa’, only a bus ride away from Panaji, displays a bewildering variety of architectural styles and is another must see for the perfect photo opportunity.

A meeting point between the East and the West; nowhere on the planet will you encounter such a myriad of cultures and traditions, historical and geographical attractions and so much more to make your visit to India a memorable one. Of course no trip is complete without a visit to the Taj Mahal; a beautiful mausoleum masterpiece that is definitely a must-see, mainly for architects and romantics alike.

Bangalore is a paradise for those who love good food. The city offers a wide choice of cuisines, from the traditional to the exotic. With so much variety you are guaranteed to run out of time long before you run out of things to do and eat. And with so many new eateries constantly opening the possibilities really are endless. Bars usually close at 11 p.m. (last orders by 10.30 p.m.); however some restaurants stay open till midnight. Eating out after pub closing time is best in the 24 hour coffee shops or at the bigger hotels, where you can sip away till the early hours of the morning.

Drenched in culture and sophistication this country truly is a place of riches, and while you explore the beauty that lies beneath you will feel like royalty surrounded by so much delight and magnificence you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
