How do you know if people are calling while you're online

BEEFY asked whether there are any programmes that work in the UK that alert you when you have an incoming call while you're online

Some people who have call-waiting on their phone line, may find that when a caller is trying to get through while they're online the call waiting will actually cut in and cut off their Internet connection. This, however, doesn't always happen, so it's not the best option to take.

For those people that actually find call-wating a hindrance when they are surfing the net, you can disable the service by inserting # 43 # before the Internet dial-up number you dial. When you want to enable the service again dial *43 #.Alternatively, sign up for a call minder service so that any phone calls received while you are online are diverted toa messaging service.

Back to Beefy's problem, there is a downloadable programme that will do thetrick. You can find it atOnline Call Manager - http://www.ocmuk.com This service is free to download, and it allows you to manage all your incoming calls. When a call is received a window will pop up on your screen telling you which number is calling. You can then choose to divert the number to another phone, transfer the call to your PC and talk over the net or send the call to a messaging service. Youphone provider will, however, chargeyou for diverting calls.

Another option is the Comtech Internet Alert 510. You plug this into your phone socket and then plug your phone and computer into this device. Then, if a call comes in while you are online, thesystem alerts you by buzzing and flashing. You can then come offline and pick up the phoneor ignore it. This devicecosts29.95, plus post and packaging and you will also need to subscribe to a call waiting service to activate it. It is only available direct fromComtech, call 01942 851800 to order.
