Half Of Brits 'Would Shun Repairs'

What a nightmare, you are just about to start a long journey in the car and your MP3 player has packed up. What do you do? Listen to the radio and try to fix it when you get home or stop at the next services chuck it and buy a new one as they are cheap as chips anyway?

A significant amount of people in the UK, more than eight out of ten, would choose not to attempt to repair an electrical device if it stopped working, according to new research. Legal & General found, in its Changing Face of British Homes report, that a stereo, DVD or mp3 player would simply be binned and replaced if it was broken.

Despite calls to make our homes more environmentally friendly, almost half of Brits would replace a stereo, mp3 or DVD player simply because it had stopped working rather than try to repair the item. Additionally, more than one in ten of Brits would replace an electrical item just because the fuse had blown.

The findings show that 25 to 34-year-olds are the most wasteful, with nine out of ten choosing to ditch rather than fix, while a similar proportion of people in the South of England were also found to nix repairs.

"With environmental issues increasingly on the public agenda, it is surprising that such a large number of us, 86 per cent, are still choosing to replace our household goods and possessions rather than try to repair them," said the head of communications at the company.

The cost of replacing all the appliances being thrown away, with brand new appliances, can mount up. Replacing household items, especially electrical goods with a ‘brand new’ or latest version, may cost more than the price paid for the old one. It may be necessary to update your household insurance policy to cover all their home contents, including any new or replacement items.

We should be more careful with our belongings and try to repair them and not replace as money charity Credit Action has reported that the amount of personal debt in the UK currently surpasses £1.3 trillion.
