Have you got a Speaker Icon on bottom right of your Task Bar ? If so, right click it and check that sound is not on 'Mute' !
Have you fiddled in the mixer/control panel and checked the wave box/slider and checked volumes?
Double-click speaker icon in system tray. If not there open audio panel from control panel and select 'show icon in ...'

Have done all suggested stuff but no luck...everything showing as working. When I try itunes I can see volume graph working.

Have you been in Control Panel audio properties and checked? Switched to digital output only .. or the SPDiF setting checked?
Check entries in Control Panel/System/Hardware/Sound Video Game devices for driver entries that say problems or ok.
Are you in the correct hole at the back?
Don't just click on the little speaker symbol beside the clock, double click and a bigger sound control panel pops up. Make sure none of the boxes is set to mute - happens

Thanks Redman41. Your answer gave me another idea. Having checked the speaker jack connection at back of computer last night with no luck, I just put it into the socket on the front of computer instead and it works!!! Brilliant, I have music again. Thanks for your help, nothing like a bit of frienly support to get the old brainbox working. Wonder wht's wrong with socket at the back though. Hmmm...
All is well !! :-))
