I was under the impression a freeview box works a bit like a modem; converting analogue signals into digital. However, now the switchover has happened and analogue is no longer being transmitted, how can the freeview box function if there's no analogue singal for it to decode?

No it doesn't do that. It decodes the digital signal. It always did that even when both analogue and digital were being transmitted.

That's the trouble with builders and their mates ... so slow for much of the time (except T-breaks and at pint-o-clock)
