I don't really know what this is but I had a very important message sent my RCS to my phone a few days ago and it has disappeared.

Would it be lurking on my phone somewhere or do they self-destruct?

As far as I can tell, it may be the same as a normal text, or it may have -destructed, depending on what it was. Lots more info here:https://support.google.com/messages/answer/9487020

Chats?  What chats?  It's not in Messages if that's what you mean.  I have never used Google Chats, I don't have it on my phone.
