Certain sites I frequent ( eg Funtrivia ) work fine on some tablets, but on others fail to load - with an error message reporting a lack of secure connection. Why? As the security is clearly OK for some tablets, is it possible for me to 'dial it down' on others?

It sounds to me as if your web browser is only allowing access to sites with 'https' security certificates (which is what is ultimately planned for all browsers). Some older websites still use 'http', which is regarded as less secure. If that's the case, the simplest solution might be to try using a different browser.

Same operating systems? Same antivirus/adblock software?

I don't know the ad-blocking/anti-virus that came as standard - I'm really not technical enough to have loaded any. Yes, the variations are all Android-Chrome, but my Apple-Safari runs it fine too.
The Chrome that will is Alba, the one that won't is Samsung Galaxy.
