I heard Peter Ustinov say on-erous. I've always pronounced it own-erous. Have I been making myself sound thick/common?
How would you pronounce it?

You are correct, Spicerack, according to Collins
Ownerous - English
Onerous - USA
More importantly, Ustinov or Usteenov?

Remember that luvvies make stuff up to appear interesting to the proles.
have no connection to the USA...
don't think i've ever actually said it out loud . . .
probably not said for an age...

In an episode of the US comedy the Big Bang Theory "solder" is pronounced "sodder".
The OED gives both pronunciations as being British and American.
We don't need to go as far as the US for different pronunciations - there are huge differences in our regional accents.
One mispronunciation that makes me want to hurl a hammer at my tv is 'leverage'.
indeed, a broad scottish accent might as well be mandarin as far as i'm concerned
Americans don't pronounce the "l" in "solder" and according to the OED, one of the British pronunciations is, "soda".
how would you say irreparable - as BBC news reader said irre pareable
which didn't sound right at all. its not how i would pronounce it.
When bored, i sometimes watch those silly videos on Youtube and the pronunciation of the voice-overs is often funnier than the actual film. Watching one last night which involved a giraffe seemingly attempting to climb on a motor bike while the hapless rider stood by and watched. The voice-over, describing the action, said; The motorcyclist doesn't realise what is about to happen." Only she pronounced motorcyclist 'mottosicklist'.
exactly, but it came our as irre para bull.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry I took so long, I had to 'restart my device' to hear Barry's link.
To be honest, given my social circles/work environment I doubt I've said it out loud too often. Anything difficult would require at least 3 expletives to describe.
Was it pronounced as if it were "irrepairable"?
