Have tried to set this up and am only using it for basics like call and texts and not emails and searches. I am having trouble with some settings which I do not understand despite downloading manual and also some icons on the home page. First the icons from left -
looks like a black and white sim with a green arrow then further along there is a green sim icon with a 2 in the middle( does this mean I have put my sim card in 'port' 2?it works ok. The there is a battery green/black showing what is left I presume. Then a triangle on it';s side - is that the signal?
There was a H with 2 up/down arrows but that has disappeared all of a sudden !

Now - apart from this my phone keeps pinging continuously and there is an envelope with @ on it. What is this? Is it emails as I do want them only texts and calls so how can I stop these?

Also when I make a call by pressing green phone icon all is well and I am connected but then the screen goes blank - the call is there but if asked to press 1 for more info how do I do this? Can I make the screen stay li?

I'm not sure why you actually need a smartphone for just calls and texts but the one you've got (which is a little long in the tooth, as it's been on the market for 7 years) only supports a 3G connection. I'm not sure why you actually need a smartphone for just calls and texts but the one you've got (which is a little long in the tooth, as it's been on the market for 7 years) only supports a 3G connection. That's not important though for just calls and texts. (4G or 5G offers much faster loading of web pages but makes no difference to calls and texts).

The letter 'H' tells you the type of signal available to your phone. You might also see 'E', '3G' or 'H+' displayed there at times, depending upon what the local mast can provide:

The pinging might well be related to incoming emails but your phone won't be getting any unless you've actually entered details of your email account into it. So have you done that? (If so, you appear to have been wasting your time!). To stop it pinging though (for whatever reason) you need to go into 'Notifications'. That's probably achieved by going to 'Settings', them to 'Sound & Notification'. Then (if the pinging is being generated by a particular app, such as the email one), you'll need to go into 'App notifications' and tap on the relevant app (which is presumably the email one) to get to a point where you can disable all notifications from it.

I'm a bit lost with the other things you've mentioned though!
Can you drag down from the icons at the top and get more information ?
The icons are probably app related.
No icons nor buttons allowing you to request the keypad ?
Check settings to ensure screen isn't set to turn off quickly.
The screen shouldn't go blank when you're making a call. Go into settings>Display>Screen timeout and see what it is set to and maybe change it to 1 or 2 mins.

When making a call which requires you to select an option click on the bottom left of the screen showing a dotted keypad. That should bring up the numbers.

Thanks everyone
Have listened to what you have said and I had signed in to Gmail and that was the pinging sound as an envelope with an @ was showing in icons at top of home screen. I have gone thru all the apps and disabled those I was sure I do not need including Gmail.

I have already set the timeout to 10 mins but this does not seem to make a difference on phone calls. Re the icons at the top of screen the H had disappeared because I by mistake unticked roaming or something? It has now reappeared at top of screen.

I have set sounds for 'ringtone' from the list and underneath there was another for 'notifications' which I assume is for texts warning when received? I set one for that also. May I ask another question please? On my old phone I had a ringtone of my own choosing which was downloaded from internet and is on my laptop. I have an app called 'my files' on this phone and if I download it from my laptop to the phone will it appear in 'my files' or elsewhere? If so - will there be an option to use as my 'ringtone'?
Thanks again both of you

>>> I have already set the timeout to 10 mins but this does not seem to make a difference on phone calls

If you're referring to the time before your call is diverted to voicemail, that's determined by your phone service provider (e.g.V odafone or EE) and not by your phone. The instructions for changing it are different for each provider, so we'll need to know which phone company you're with in order to be able to furnish you with the information you're seeking.

Most Android phones allow you to select any file from your Music folder as your ringtone, so you need to put your favourite ringtone file in there.

Thanks again - I meant the time it takes until the screen goes off and I have to press the on/off button to get it back. The Vodafone voicmail is ok thanks.
Have found my previous ringtone 'music' and it has allowed me to make it my new ringtone on this phone.

Regards
settings/display/screen timeout...you can set it for seconds or minutes
before the screen goes black ie times out, saves battery.

Thanks Fender62 - I have sorted everything now except the screen going blank whilst calling someone! The option you gave me I understand and have set it for 5 mins and other various times but this is only for the home screen to switch off then to save power - and it does just that. However....when dialling a call and it connectsafter about 30 seconds the screen goes completely blank. I can still talk ok to the person at other end BUT if I wish to end the call I must press 'Home' then double tap the screen to bring up the little red 'end call' icon and then press it! Sees very long winded and as I mentioned earlier should I be asked to say 'press 1' during the call I am goosed! Cannot find any other settings to alter this. I would expect the call screen to remain lit up until the call is ended or (just thinking) will the on/off button on the side of phone end the call? Finally what is this 'double tap screen' for and can I disable it?

Thanks a lot
Moggie
I think the screen goes blanks when you put it to your ear to prevent you from touching any part of the screen with your ear. That's why you need to double-tap it to bring the screen back.

If this is what you are seeing the tap on the icon showing keypad to select number keys - press 1 - etc.

Don't know if this link works but here goes...

The screen on my Android phone goes blank during a call. If I encounter "Press 1 for this, press 2 for that . . . " etc, I have to get the screen back up before I'm able to do so. I just thought it was normal!
Question Author
Thanks to you both for that - it seems that it is normal on this type of phone to have a blank screen which I did not realise so if it occurs that I need to 'press 1' then I can go back into the screen.
The link was helpful as it seems others had had the same problem.
Finally I have just realised trawling thru the full manual online that whilst when the phone rings I press the 'Home' button to open the call - I can also just press the on/off button on the side of the phone and that ends the call! Something else I have learnt!
Thanks everyone for taking me thru this set up procedure.

Good luck moggie. My daughter has just bought me a Galaxy tablet for my birthday and as I never read instructions every day is an adventure.
Question Author
It is me again! Just one more thing I cannot fathom. I know how to call someone but a text? I clicked on text icon and it came up. I put in the recipient from my contacts list and then wrote the message - so far so good but how do I send it! There is no send button that I can see anywhere. What am I missing here?
Thanks again
Question Author
Further to my last question please ignore me! Having looked again I see that all I have to do is to tap the text envelope icon to send!

Why I was confused is that I thought it was 2 incoming texts as the envelope had a number 2 in it. I realise that all this means is that I have a 2 sim phone and my main (only) sim is in slot 2.

Just off to Specsavers now!
Glad you have it sorted. Just keep playing and looking around on it. You will naturally just work it out and pick it up xx
