1) Open Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer)
2) Select the documents on your external hard drive
3) Type Ctrl-C (copy)
4) Select the destination folder on your hard drive
5) Type Ctrl-V (paste)

Just the add to the above, the process explained by Mark will work with both files and folders, so if you have a folder that contains all the files you want to copy over just select the folder rather than each individual file.

I'm afraid I have had a senior moment or two, after i have selected the document where on the page do I type CTRL-C and CTRL-V what am I doing wrong?
As Mark said

Once you find the files or folders you want to move you select them

Once selected do the Ctrl-C to take a copy of them

Move to the destination drive and folder where you want to put them

Press Ctrl-v

This will paste the copy of the files
They are keyboards shortcuts, on the keyboard hold down 'Ctrl and C' for Copy and 'Ctrl and V' for paste.
> where on the page

What "page" are you talking about?
Yes, you don't type Ctrl-C/V, you press Ctrl-C/V

Because I had other issues with my computer I telephoned BT-IT Help and i did mention the problem with my documents being on the hard drive.
His sugestion was to leave them there and the would not slow my PC hard drive down with too much on it,he said that he as two hard drives as backup
and leaves the connect to his Pc all the time.
Thanks to all who gave me help also, have a good day
