Press alt, then click on the view menu and select toolbars > menu bar to make the menus stay visible.

Right click on an area just outside the address bar and select "show tabs on a seperate row"

The refresh button is now at the far right end of the address bar.

thank you, why has my address bar gone smaller and the arrows bigger??

and the favourites keeps disappearing
Because you've been upgraded from IE8 to IE9

Read the link above and it will tell you how to get it back to looking and acting more like IE8.

it at the far right of the address bar.
It's a pain isn't it gina, think I'm sorted now. My refresh is now at the end of the bar top left corner, the circle with arrow between the magnifying glass and the little cross.

Follow the instructions to put the tabs on a separate line.

And you can't get to IE7, it's been upgraded to IE9.

Question Author
oops sorry wrong one

thanks chuck
Might as well get you really exasperated chuck - why has this upgrade happened overnight without any warning or permission requested? I didn't even shut down in the night, it's just planted itself of its own accord.
Basically to stop people from using 10year old outdated browsers with huge security holes in them.

The change from an opt-in update to an opt-out update happened in January in some parts of the world, it's obviously been implemented in the UK this week.

although you may see it as an inconvenience you are far far better and safer running an up-to-date browser, earlier versions of IE were insecure and they don't support a lot of the emerging technologies that are starting to be used across the internet so you'd also find a lot of sites simply would not work with older browsers.
Question Author
thanks for that chuck, much appreciated
thanks although I'd say IE8 hasn't been around that long and at work we're still on IE7. It was a temporary inconvenience but I feel suitably admonished for moaning.
