My anti virus is due to expire today and I was checking on AVG's free download as a replacement but I have just read some reviews and some of them claim that AVG has caused problems on their computers. I would like to point out that I am not very computer literate even though I have been using it for 3 years so I don't want to install AVG and find that my computer crashes so any help would be appreciated

Avast seems to be the most recommended these days

Try Microsoft Security Essentials ! Works for me and it's free.
I use it, I had my computer built to spec last year and they guys who built it suggested it, and consider theycould have put on a paid for and walked.

Its been nothing but fine I have had no problems at all. I have recommended it to all my friends and they have no problems.

I have read on here that it may not be as up to date as it could be, but I have put on the latest veriosn and its fine.

Put it on if you don't like it take it off, be aware though that you would have to remove the old security software, especialy Norton as Norton doesn't "like" anything else and it will conflict and crash your machine.
AVG has to perform an initial index process (took around 2 hours on my pc). After that, all is well. It also scans quicker than avast. A recent "Computer Active" magazine article said AVG was the top free anti-virus program.
I've used it for years on a variety of machines and it's always been perfectly fine with all of them. It has little oddities like ocassionally flagging something as a potential threat that is in fact perfectly okay, but by and large I quite like AVG.
