Note that the police recently cautioned people for doing this, driving round in their car. See here

Of course, as you say, your question is just of of curiosity.

I would argue that if their conection is open/unencrypted then they deserve to have other people using it
Would you give us your bank details macspeedy. Just out of curiosity you understand.

i dont know how a mac address is even the same as a bank account address so stop talking poo piggybacking a signal is not the same as cracking bank account details stop being silly
It's still theft of service and the 'if they're unsecured they're asking for it' argument doesn't work either, if you leave your door unlocked you may well get burgled but whoever did it would still be guilty.

this really wasnt supposed to be a legal debate the question was out of general interest i wondered if the procedure was possible im not interested in the legalities of some sucker leaving there door open and asking for a burglary its not as if were talking of stealing someones belongings for our own gain its more like surely if someones dsl connection is on unlimited downloads they wont be charged for another system using unused bandwidth if anyone suffers from this it would be the over extortionate internet providers who loose yet another /$2000 a year for a service that really doesnt cost that much to run ,who has the moral high ground but thats another question
