does anyone know how to convert an mp3 file so as to put it on a CD that plays just plain CDs?

You have to make sure you write the mp3s to CD in AUDIO format and not as mp3 files.

Note with AUDIO format you are limted to 80 minutes of music.

Tried this but wont play back on ordinary CDplayer !

I have Windows Media Player and in the Help there is an option "Help with Burning".

See the option "Burn an audio CD"

This explains how to burn an Audio CD.
I have done that using Nero Express burning software.

You may take a look at this step by step guide, it will teach you how to burn mp3 songs to CD to make a playback Audio CD, it's easy to understand and works pretty well for me.

i use nero express 7, when i open it up it gives me option of music as audio or mp3, drag and drop and done.
windows media is usually pretty good at doing them as i've also used this but prefer nero
