My Windows XP had a "Safely Remove Harware" icon in the botton right of screen but I haven't been able to find it on Windows 8. Can anyone tell me please if it exists somewhere in the system and how is it accessed or is it no longer necessary when removing say a memory stick.
Thanks.

if you go to customising the notifications then there is a tick box to Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar - does the icon appear if you display them all? you might need to have something plugged in for it to show at all

It's there on my system.

If you have a small upward-pointing triangle next to the tasktray click on that and select Customise - or you can right-click on the taskbar and select Properties and then use the Notification option in that pop-up - then you can see and change the behaviour of all the icons.
I should have added then when you click on the triangle you might see the icon that you are seeking displayed there without needing to change the settings.

Thanks Bibblebug.
I've expanded the task bar to show the hidden icons but the icon for "Safely remove Hardware" is not among them and The Notification Area shows only the same icons as they appear on the task bar. So how do I change the settings to add add the icon that I need?
