I'm a bit confused about 'updates pending'. Overnight it looks as though some updates have been installed, because I had to sign in this a.m; but clicking on the updates icon tells me that there are updates pending, one of which is IE9 - I'll leave that one for the moment - and the other is Windows 7 service pack 1. I expect I should install this one, but why hasn't it been done automatically overnight with the rest? Advice welcome, please.

Ar eyou signed in with Administrator rights?
Question Author
I have no idea, Samak...I'm the sole user on the computer, but I didn't set it up myself. Just used my password this morning.
You may need Administrator rights to install the updates. Go to Control Panel, User Accounts and Family Safety, User Accounts and it will tell you if you are a standard user or an administrator.

Yes, it says 'administrator, password protected'.
Go to Control Panel, System and Security, Windows Update and you should have the option to install updates.
Question Author
Yes, but is it a good idea? I still don't understand why it didn't do it automatically - is it because it apparently takes 30 mins to install?
The service pack is supposed to make your computer safer and more reliable so yes.
I'm not sure why it doesn't update them automatically; it doesn't on my computer either although I've asked it to do so. Another Microsoft mystery of space and time...

I have to go now. Good luck with it all.
Does nobody actually read questions?

It didn't install because it's offered as an optional update at the moment and Yes install it.

there question answered.
corrrr Chuck's not a little ray of sunshine first thing in the morning is he? LOL
the service pack is a big update and can take up to 40 mins to install and requires rebooting at least twice.....this is why it has not installed automatically....all my updates install automatically but the service pack did not.

Thank you everyone, I'll install it later when I can sit in front of the screen for half an hour and do what it tells me to do.
And thank you, Chuck, I've often felt the same way in the past about answering questions, as my posting history will show. (probably because I used to be an examiner!)
Can any of you clever people tell me if there is a new Service Pack update for Windows XP,I have SP3 installed.
Would like to add,my desktop PC is Windows 7...and I HATE it.,does anyone out there feel the same.
