Charlton retired at the end of the 1972/73 season. I believe Lou Macari played as his direct replacement for the following season, when Man Utd were relegated. Stuart Pearson was signed for the start of the second division campaign 1974/75.

Not a Utd fan - and stand to be corrected by any - but i believe it may have been Stuart Pearson? He was certainly at Utd just after Bobby Charlton left.

Thanks - I also thought it was Macari, & after some checking almost certain that is right..

I thought he'd retired in 1974 but i see that he left Utd in 1973 to become manager of PNE, then became player-manager the season after that, scoring 8 times in 38 appearances. Strangely his last goal came for Waterford Utd for whom he made 3 appearances?!
