As a rugby referee myself it has just dawned on me that George Clancy is refereeing the Italy v Ireland match today.
I was always led to believe(and I'm sure it has ever been thus) that an IRB Ref does not officiate in a match involving his own parent/adopted country?

Is this the first ever instance, as I can think of no other in my living memory, certainly not in the 6 Nations?

Having just discussed the matter with my brother after posting, it would appear that I do in fact need a return trip to Vision Express!
At least I'm living up to the stereotype......

Many thanks for the answer in the meantime Margo Tester!

Never mind ChillDoubt - try Specsavers!! I'm still sulking after last night's debacle!

Sulking? Words could not begin to portray my utter devastation.
I can take losing to anybody, but not the Charioteers in our own back yard.
Best team won, no doubt, doesn't make it any more palatable though.....
Very true - husband and son having a good gloat thought. My Mum was Welsh and I have always supported them, she was from Pontycymmer

Nothing quite like spouses and offspring who twist the knife, is there?!
I could find a word for them but I might be banned so I won't risk it.
