Answered as diphthong in Crosswords. Not sure why
4, Cytoplasm ?

CYTOPLASM
Ignore mine!
Is it because the central part is the oe
(the OE in the middle of 'amoeba' is a diphthong)
oe (central part of amoeba) is a diphthong

chambers,

cytoplasm noun, biol the part of a living cell, excluding the nucleus (sense 2), that is enclosed by the cell membrane and which contains a range of organelles.
(these are cryptic clues, not just definitions that one would get in a non-cryptic crossword)
I'm certain it's DIPHTHONG as it's a cryptic. If it wasn't cryptic the answer would be nucleus rather than cytoplasm in my opinion, although Biology wasn't my strongest subject

It's too early!
3: REDCAR = red car(pet)
