Just read this story about a gang of thieves tunnelling into a Tescos to steal Cash machine Cash Boxes, and it reminded me of a story from a couple of years ago, where much the same thing was done, again in the North West of England.

This was the previous story, from 2012;

And it seems there was an attempt back in 2007 too, although that one was foiled.

So -copycat gangs, or do you reckon is it the same gang of industrious, hard-working thieves? I do not condone what they did, but i do have a certain sneaking admiration for their industriousness and planning, to say nothing of that fact that they can seemingly keep their mouths shut! :)

If I was called in to advise Inspector Lestrade in this case I'd advise him to look for dusty unemployed miners. As far as theiving goes it does have a bit of style about it.
It is an awful lot of work, I hope the amount of money made it worth the effort.
Apparently the police are asking for witnesses who may have seen covered in soil, late at night in the Manchester area!!
Seen people!

Arthur Conan Doyle started it all, with some tunneling thieves in one of his Sherlock Holmes stories.
Police are now working with a mole to determine the identity of the culprits.
alas, the hardworking but suspicious people covered in soil were probably off having a beer at the bingo.

V.good Tilly ;)

I know the concept is old and has been done before - but the target of these modern day thieves seems rather less glamorous than a bank vault containing valuables or whatever :)

I just think it very probably is one gang, who are close-mouthed about what they are doing. It also speaks to public compliance in that we, as members of the public, rarely if ever would dream of questioning a work team digging by the roadside, simply assuming instead they were genuine and had all the relevant permissions etc.
Just had the same conversation in the office and I said I admired their hard work, co-operation and planning.... something we could use more of around here! ;o)
