i think i asked this before, what is the difference between what amazon call hardcover and waterstones call hardback, i want to order a book off amazon that says hardcover but make sure it's what is commonly known as hardback, as don't want more faffing about getting wrong thing and spending money on sending it back if it's wrong, the book by the way has a release date of today...

thanks maydup, i thought i had asked this before, just wasn't sure, so i can get it now cheers.
There is something known in the industry as a trade paperback, but I'm not sure what the retail term is for is (although not hardback/hardcover). It's basically a sort of deluxe paperback with heavier-duty, laminated covers than a traditional paperback.

I'd be interested to know what booksellers/retailers describe them as.
With a hard back you have to take a chance the front is hard also.
With a hard cover you assume the cover goes right over the spine from front to back.
I've always taken them to be the same thing.
(similarly, a paperback is stout paper, all the way round)
