I was highly delighted with myself for solving three puzzles today without looking at the answers. However, when I did look I was puzzled by the solution, even though I got it right.

Perhaps someone could explain. I might just be being thick!

Here it is
5 Chattanooga Charlie's bank account number is 289986788. He remembers this with the aid of a mnemonic.
Now I use mnemonics a lot with my students and immediately came up with the word 'Tennessee'. I just used the first letter of the name of each number.

Chris' solution says ' Take the lowest digit starting with the letters of Tennessee. Once you've used the lowest digit, use the next lowest, if there is one.'

I really do not understand this explanation.

But just using the word TENNESSEE would be ambiguous as you wouldn't know, when decoding, whether it was a 2 or 3, or a 6 or 7. Therefore the need for lowest digit etc. Ok?

no idea. And I didn't get the first one either, not having heard the programme
Question Author
Jno, it's not a programme on the radio. It's a puzzle section in the Guardian.
T could be TWO or THREE so use the lowest digit which is 2. Similarly S can be SIX or SEVEN so use the lowest one first which is 6 then the next lowest which is 7.
Question Author
I see that, elliemay but why go to all that trouble when
Two
Eight
Nine
Nine
Eight
Six
Seven
Eight
Eight.................spells Tennessee?
Is that not what he's said?
lowest digit starting with T...2
E...8
and so on
To distinguish between Two and Three, similarly to get Six and seven in the correct order.

I think I see it...........................but it still seems a lot of faffing about using lowest digit then next lowest digit.
I think my way is much more simple.

Question Author
Yes, thank you elliemay. I've definitely got it now.
You're welcome, Tilly 2.
Tilly, the first question related to something he'd heard on the telly, a mispronunciation (alleged).
Question Author
Yes, jno it was the aitch, haitch issue. To do with HMV being repeatedly mispronounced.
