Unless the compiler believes that MAGE is synonym for MAGUS, which it isn't.

BTW, there's a section under Questions & Puzzles specifically for crossword questions...

Thanks Mark. milage was the best I could come up with too but didn't like it for the same reason.

Mark - Chambers gives "Magus" as a Persian priest, and "mage" as an alternative, meaning magus or sorcerer. Perhaps the compiler can be allowed this, especially in Mephisto.
