You have the God of the Old Testament/Torah, who ordered killings, and nations to be conqured, but these were only against specific people and nations.

Then you have the God of the New Testament, who is all Loving, all forgiving, and abhors killing,

Then you have the God of the Qur'an, who has ordered the killing and taking of nations of all unbelievers.

These three, are all supposed to be the same God.

Is this possible?.

i suspect it stems from the contrast (or contradiction, whichever fits) of moving from polytheism to montheism. in the olden days, there were many gods for different things. so one could be nice and lovely and just interested in orgies and sex (ok, if you insist, fertility), and another could be moody and mean and send thunderstorms or plagues and crush your...

This question well shows how difficult it is to regard God as some kind of entity. Good, evil, love and hatred all emanate from the human spirit. Most humans need something to believe in and religions are attempts to organise their lives - for better or worse. I wish I knew what to believe, but scriptures don't provide the answer.
Its nothing more than a rediculous fairy story!

Take the Ark for instance, how many different species did Noah actually get on that boat and of course they were all within walking distance of the ark, their food alone would have filled 10 arks to feed all those animals, they would also have to save all the fish from the rivers and the seas, as during the flood all the salt water would have poisoned the freshwater fish and vice versa. Did this God really need to kill almost every living thing, every baby and every animal? were they all so evil? And after the flood, well Noah and his family have now got to re-populate the world, a touch of incest going on there for sure. Come on guys, its a silly fairy story!!!

To believe this one really needs to close the eye of reason!!
Oh!! and of coarse, where exactly did all that water go from the flood that flooded the whole world?

If you dont like your religion being laughed at, you shouldnt have such a funny religion.
<<Is this possible?>>

No.
None of it is possible. Or even plausible. Or even beneficial.

Man loves stories - especially the ones that make us seem important.
Of course it is ..if you want to believe it.
In reality there are as many gods as there are believers
Easy to see why those who follow the Gods of the Torah and the Qur'an are so keen to kill each other.

beso, The Communists didn't, we know that, because they said so, and they killed as much as the believers did.

Anyway, some of these answers are good, thanks all for replying, shame someone like keyplus didn't come on to explain it.
Just let me say good to see you after a long absence, Lonnie...Shalom!
"Gods Differences"
Sounds like a new swear word !

Anyway - we all worship the same god maaan !

Thanks Clanad, got some personel problems, but anyway, its good to see you on here as well. Like home from home.
////shame someone like keyplus didn't come on to explain it. //////

I can’t explain Torah (OT) or NT as they are not the books of my religion in the present shape. However if you bring the original (authenticated) books without fabrications or if any single incident in OT and NT has been mentioned in Quran too then I am quite happy to own that and explain that.

As for Quran, you know, I do and so do all others here that it has been explained so many time before but just in case if it needs another go then I am more than willing.
i suspect it stems from the contrast (or contradiction, whichever fits) of moving from polytheism to montheism. in the olden days, there were many gods for different things. so one could be nice and lovely and just interested in orgies and sex (ok, if you insist, fertility), and another could be moody and mean and send thunderstorms or plagues and crush your enemies (all of which presumably were good and bad in varying measure).

when these new one god's were created, they had to be all things. good, kind, loving, spiteful and unforgiving. at the time they were created this was fine because a god was expected to give rewards and punish you whenever they saw fit, or you offended them in someway.

these new monotheistic gods are no different, but societal change leads to the ideals of gods personality (my gods loving and kind etc, your god is a mean bastard). so yes, they are al the same god but with multipersonalities,or they are all different and have good/bad sides to them. its a believers prerogative to decide which they prefer. but in my reality none of them exist so to me they are nothing but tenuous justification for the actions of humans.
Just a couple of facts about the myths, Lonnie, if that's not a contradiction!

The OT God did not confine his slaughtering to specific people and nations; on at least one occasion he murdered everyone on earth except the Noah family. Which makes him more of a monster than any human tyrant.

Except by word of mouth God does not appear in the NT. Neither does he do much unless you believe the silly story about raising Jesus from the dead. (I often wonder why Jesus, if he used magic to raise Lazarus, couldn't use the same magic on himself.)

But, as RATTER15 says, they're all just fairy stories anyway.

chakka35, I'll give you that about the flood, however, I never said anythig about God in the NT, what I said was 'the God OF the New Testament', there's a difference I think.

Answerprancer, 'Anyway - we all worship the same god maaan !' would you like to explain that please?.

keyplus9, I mentioned you, as a believer, hoping that someone like you, makes no difference if Muslim, Jewish or Christian, could explain, or try to, those differences.

As for you not knowing the NT or Torah, you should, so you can discuss rationally with people of those religions.

I have a copy of the Qur'an and Hadith in my house, for reference purposes.

They're very interesting.

He did 'use the same magic on himself'. Three days after he was crucified he rose again and ascended into heaven.

Lonnie - When and where did I say that I don't know OT or NT? All I said that I do not want to talk about the books I don't believe in. Otherwise just like you I have books including bible, Vedas and lot more on my book shelf as well. I also have a good number of books atheists talk about. But that does not mean that I believe in everything I read.
hahaha call taxi & key+ shows up :)

Forget all these gods of the desert and get with the loop in UK 21st century.
Question Author
Your right keyplus90, I misread, for that, I apologise. But you should be prepared to talk about others reigious books, after all, like you, they believe in them, and so long as you can keep it to a discussion, thats good all round.
