Apart from the obvious typos, yes 7a is right and the answer is MASSY (a synonym for massive, which can mean powerful) A = 'one' inside MSS (manuscripts/'writings').

Maybe 'in service as,' is needed for 'steed,' with 'watched' (guarded) as the container, but I'm not sure. I wondered if rowing backwards (in the direction the cox would be looking) might make it part of the def?
