Re the instructions- you're looking for three numbers ("Q")- the "Q" that prefaces 34/22A and 3/8/38 (the unclued lights) happens to be the same. The "Q" which relates to 41/39/1D is different and not derived from the same reasoning, which is why there is a hint at 7D as to how that "Q" might be discovered. Hope that helps!
