1) Bit of smoke's back in top piece of lab kit (8) T?S?T?B? It's obviously TESTTUBE but, whilst I get TTUB = "bit of smoke's back", why/how does TESE= "top"?

2) What may pick up fool with no work, feeling pressure to return (12) ?E?S?R?S?O?N. Again, it's obviously DESSERTSPOON, but is this a (rare) typo for The Times (FOOL instead of FOOD) or am I missing something?

3) Generous with funds ultimately invested in refuge, perhaps (8) H?N?S?M?. Obviously HANDSOME (= Generous), but I don't get the wordplay. If HOME = refuge, perhaps and S = funds ultimately, is AND supposed to be a synonym for with?
