Better, having dismissed gathering. O-T-O? If outdo, why? I've been doing crosswords for 40 years, how on earth do you get mahogany from Wood finding tree, old golfer stymied? The bliss of Bunthorne was, however hard, when you got it you knew it couldn't possibly be anything else and you wondered why it had taken soon long!

Outdo is Out = dismissed, sporting term, cricket + a Do is a gathering, party etc.
Outdo- out(dismissed) + do(gathering-party)
Mahogany- Hogan(old golfer) inside may(tree)
Just a guess for Mahogany - May could be the tree and there might be an old golfer called Hogan?
Good guess nac.:-)

Thanks all! I get outdo. Never heard of Hogan. Proper names have no place in a cryptic crossword! (Is there a better way to respond to Answer bank answers?)
