28 across fills itself in as COT (unless I've got something wrong). How does this work? The clue is

She's all thumbs but left for Malbec (3)

Also, unless I've misunderstood, "Military club" appears to be an anagram indicator in 6 down. Why? Is this rhyming slang or something?

In 6 down one of the definitions for club as a transitive verb is: ...to throw into confusion (milit.)... An unusual anagram indicator!

Don't know if this helps or not?

"Malbec (sometimes called Côt and Auxxerois) is from France where it grows in the Sud-Ouest"
*Anyone?

( 6d Military club chairman hiding old glasses of water (9))
..6d Harmonica

That's 28 across accounted for, thanks. I'd parsed 6 down as an anagram of CHAIRMAN round O with "glasses of water" as the definition, and this leaves "Military club" as the apparent anagram indicator. I'm still bamboozled by this!
Military club could loosely be described as Mess - which could be the anagram indicator

I hadn't thought of that, but isn't it so indirect as to be unfair?
I agree it is indirect. I cant think of another explanation at the moment though

That's got to be it - thanks! Wouldn't have worked it out in a million years.
