Huff and puff ?

Blow the gaff ?

idioms.thefreedictionary.com/blow the gaffCached
blow the gaff (British old-fashioned, informal) to cause trouble for someone by letting other people know something that they were trying to keep secret
Question Author
Thank you, Baldric and others. 'Blow the Gaff' fits nicely, but it upsets another difficult clue, in one letter

The clue is "plant displaying seasonal colour" (11) for which I had tentatively entered: APOCYNACEAE. If Blow the Gaff is correct (and I think it is), then this other clue should now begin with W. Only the two E at the end of the word are safely anchored. Any ideas on this latter problem?

Winteraceae?

noun - small family of chiefly tropical shrubs and trees of genera Drimys and Pseudowintera; sometimes included in Magnoliaceae

Wintergreen?
Think Jo's answer more likely
Question Author
Thank you, Captain2. Your suggestion fits nicely, and is certainly seasonal!
This is best andwer.
..or not ;o)

Can I change my mind please?

Question Author
Yes, Wintergreen will fit best, so thank you to all, and happy crosswording!
Thank you :)
