No, I have not yet cracked it, but think I have 4a which looks like a good hint to start with!

Having trouble cracking this theme! I have part of 1d: Richard Tawney and 4a which seems to be battalion, but finding it difficult to see the link! Any hints? And also I would like to confirm the following, please:
